Standard 3.7 - Engage parents/carers in the educative process
Proficient Plan for appropriate and contextually relevant opportunities for parents/carers to be involved in their children’s learning.
There is a number of different ways that I try and involve parents/carers in their child’s learning throughout the school year. Below are some examples:
Class Dojo: At the beginning of the school year our school used Class Dojo as a communication method between parent and teachers. Through this app I was able to remind parents of upcoming events, share news from our classroom and share photos of student learning. These photos were a great conversation starter between parents and students.
Contact books: My Receptions all have a contact book in their reader folder. This book is for parents and teachers to communicate through. I use this book to write notes to parents, share achievements with parents and to send home school notices. The images below are some examples of the notes writing these communication books.
Morning Reading: I encourage parents to stay in the classroom for 15 minutes each morning to read with their child. This allows busy families who struggle to fit student reading in at night to still read daily. It also gives students an opportunity to share their learning with their parents. I am also able to speak to parents if needed during this time.
Assembly: When students receive an award at an assembly, or perform at an assembly, or host an assembly I make sure I inform parents so they can be there to support/celebrate with their child.
Term Overview: At the beginning of each term I send home a term overview that outlines to parents what their child will be learning in each subject area. It also outlines the important dates for the term. Below is a copy of one of my recent term overviews.
