Example 3:
This repeated subtraction lesson is another example of when I have used John Fleming's, Explicit Instruction Model. I used this model, in particular it's lesson sequence, to teach numerous lessons in a division unit, in mathematics. I structured my lessons in a way that followed the I do, WE do, YOU do format. For example in this lesson I started with I DO, where I, as the teacher defined the skill being taught, explained the learning outcomes, demonstrated the skill and explained each step carefully. I then revised the steps by completing another example. Then as a whole class we practiced the skill as a group by completing some examples together. This is the WE DO stage. To make sure all students were participating I used pop-sticks to select students to answer a question or complete a step in the skill. By using pop-sticks each student needed to be following along as they didn't know who would be selected. Students also used this time to ask any question they had. Lastly in the YOU DO stage students had the opportunity to test their knowledge and understanding of the skill by completing individual activities that included repeated subtraction. |
