Proficient Ensure students’ well-being and safety within school by implementing school and/or system, curriculum and legislative requirements.
Maintaining student’s safety and well-being is an important part of teaching. It is important that students feel safe, supported and respected at school. There are many ways that I maintain student safety and wellbeing in my classroom and within the school yard. Below area some examples: - Creating risk assessments for activities that require them - Organising seating within my classroom that supports student well-being and safety - Implementing the schools SunSmart Policy - Displaying and referring to Evacuation and Lock down procedures - Following the schools behaviour management policy - Communicating with parents about incidents and behaviours - Having up to date RAN training - Setting expectations within the class
Below are a couple of examples in more detail.
Example One: Through organising a few excursions outside of school, I have filled out a number of risk assessments. The goal of the risk assessments is to ensure students are safe at all times. The risk assessments outline the potential risks and what we are going to do about them. Below is a copy of one of the risk assessments that were submitted to our exec team along with our excursion proposal for approval. All names of people and venues and phone numbers have been removed.
Example two: Another way I maintain student well-being and safety is through setting and maintaining behaviour expectations with the students. Below are some images of the process we went through to establish our expectations for guided reading. We went through what it would look like, sound like and feel like. We then established the students role and the teachers role. Finally, we came up with our overall expectations.
