Another teaching strategy I use frequently within my classroom is question pop sticks. I have a bag of pop sticks that have students’ names on them. Instead of asking for hands up to answer questions I will regularly use the pop sticks to choose who is going to answer the questions. I pre-warn students that this is what I am going to do. This strategy ensures that all students are engaged with the task and thinking about the question as they don’t know when they may be asked to answer. With particular students I may pre-warn them when it is their turn to alleviate some worry and anxiety. I also use the pop sticks to form random groups of students from time to time. This ensures that groups are of mixed ability and that students are not always working with the same people. |
